WHAT IS
HEMP & CANNABIS
Knowing the difference
A Simplified Guide
Carl Linneaus named the cannabis sativa plant in 1753 and included it in his book, Species Plantarum. This book included all the plants known to man at the time.
Hemp is a strain of the cannabis sativa plant that is grown primarily for use in industrial applications.
It is a common misconception that hemp and marijuana are two different species of the cannabis plant. In reality, they are not distinct species. They’re just two different names for cannabis, a type of flowering plant in the cannabaceae family. The difference is in their cannabinoid profile.
The word marijuana was popularised by Harry J. Anslinger in the 1930s, during his campaigns against the drug. Before that, the word cannabis was the scientific name and far more commonly used. However, Anslinger weaponised the word marijuana to associate it with Mexicans, who were stereotyped as people who frequently used cannabis.
The U.S. government continued to widely spread “marijuana” in anti-cannabis propaganda to cement the association to Mexican immigrants. All of the anti-cannabis propaganda spread myths about cannabis, while also perpetuating racist stereotypes.
The 1930s to the 1970s saw anti-cannabis propaganda persisting heavily, contributing to the plant becoming illegal in many countries, until recently.

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of over 100 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant. It is the second most prevalent active compound found in cannabis, behind THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is the compound in cannabis that gives a psychoactive high.
There are two species of cannabis plant, Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Sativa.
CBD can be derived from both strains, but hemp is only derived from Cannabis Sativa. By law in Australia, a hemp crop must exceed 1% THC.
CBD has no psychoactive properties and will not give you a “high”. There is no evidence it has any abuse or dependence potential and to date, there is no evidence that it is associated with any serious side effects.
CBD has been credited with relieving numerous medical conditions.
